Retired Detective Rich Wistocki of Be Sure Consulting Inc. spoke to middle and high school students about the risks involved in social media and talking to strangers online today in two separate assemblies. Det. Wistocki was an officer working in Child Cyber Crimes and is a Master Trainer in this field. He has first-hand experience with these types of crimes.
Det. Wistocki’s message centered around letting the students know that no one has the right to make them do something or make them feel uncomfortable online. Many students are on apps and games that have online chat features. Det. Wistoki showed the students how to verify who they talk to and what to do if they find themselves a victim of online crimes. He also explained that it is okay to talk to a trusted adult like their parents if they are in trouble.
In this day and age of cell phones and access to online apps and games, this message was very good in helping our students understand the dangers that are out there. Det. Wistocki did a great job explaining the information at their level and gave the students tools to help themselves out in troubling situations.
